The Role

In this position, you will join Developing World Markets’ (DWM) Private Debt team and have primary responsibility for all transaction-related aspects of deals in the Latin America (LATAM) region, including marketing, origination, termsheet negotiation, due diligence, transaction documentation, and on-going monitoring.  DWM’s primary sector focus is specialty finance companies, including micro- and small-business lenders, SME lenders, and leasing and factoring companies.  To a lesser, although equally important extent, you will also be responsible for focusing on originating and structuring investible opportunities in the renewables, agribusiness, water & sanitation, affordable housing and healthcare sectors to satisfy DWM’s broader investment goals.  

The Regional Representative (RR) will join a team of international finance professionals and help close on, and further develop, an active pipeline of deal flow within the region.  This is a remote-working position, and the RR will be based in the region.  The ultimate location is flexible, though there is a preference for Lima, Peru.  The RR will work closely with the Debt team transactors currently based in Ecuador and Nicaragua, along with the broader team, in the development and marketing of the firm’s lending products and the management of client relationships across the region.  Travel throughout the region will be required.   

The RR will report to the LATAM Region Heads and will also work closely with other DWM senior management and staff based around the world to manage deal flow and advance transactions to successful closing.  

What the Responsibility Set Includes

  • Marketing DWM’s lending capabilities across the region within various forums (existing borrowers, new borrowers via reference and cold-calling, independent research, industry conferences, etc.)
  • Conducting sourcing (i.e., non deal-specific) conversations with potential clients, private credit funds, development banks, and broker/advisory firms focused on the region
  • Conducting origination (i.e., deal-specific) conversations 
  • Evaluating the suitability of investment opportunities based on financial strength and alignment with DWM’s fund management criteria and managing the associated information flow (i.e., issuing eligibility analysis information requests, compiling and analyzing data)
  • Preparing eligibility memoranda for consideration by funds advised and managed by DWM
  • Drafting and negotiating term sheets with prospective borrowers
  • Up-keeping and managing internal databases with market and deal-specific information to monitor deal life-cycle process 
  • Coordinating DWM’s due diligence strategy and conducting on-site, as well as remote, due diligence processes 
  • Drafting and presenting investment proposals for consideration by all relevant credit committees in order to secure credit approvals for transactions
  • Liaising with DWM’s Risk team in the preparation of investment proposals and periodic regional reviews
  • Liaising with DWM’s Legal team in the preparation of transaction documentation, including loan agreements, guaranty agreements, legal opinions, and various other documentation elements related to the closing and disbursement processes
  • Assisting in the development of pipeline for new lending structures (e.g., DWM’s “Impact Note” CLOs)
  • Planning and participating in regional travel related to marketing and origination efforts, including industry conferences
  • Proactive assistance on investment monitoring, impact reporting and market research
  • Researching special projects and presenting results to senior management 
  • Mentoring fellow colleagues

What the Successful Candidate Must Possess 

  • Master’s degree/CFA, with relevant coursework in economics, finance and/or accounting 
  • 7+years of experience in commercial or investment banking, corporate finance, asset management, preferably in connection with emerging markets, international development, and/or socially responsible investing 
  • Expertise in financial institutions analysis
  • Experience leading transactions from start to finish
  • Network and relationships to potential investees across LATAM
  • Significant financial and credit analysis skills, strategic and creative thinking abilities
  • Strong written and oral communications skills, and proactive communication style
  • A strong work ethic, and an ability to learn quickly, manage multiple high priority projects and work effectively both as an individual and as part of a team
  • Problem-solving skills mixed with a can-do attitude suited to a small firm culture 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 
  • Professional demeanor and outgoing personality with strong interpersonal skills 
  • Written and spoken fluency in Spanish and English is required 
  • Willingness and ability to travel extensively (as Covid-19 travel restrictions allow)
